Headed out after work today, to the 240 acre Dwaas Kill Nature Preserve, located on Pierce Road just west of exit 10 off the Northway. The Preserve was established back in 2005 and when I last visited here in 2013 the trails were a bit overgrown and in need of some care. Pleasant, sunny and cool weather greeted me as I headed into the woods, away from the sounds of constant traffic along Pierce Road. An informational kiosk with trail map can be found at the trailhead.
The orange trail drops down from the road, crossing into a wetland and then a very nice footbridge over the Long Kill.
The orange trail forms a loop atop a small ridge, with views down to the Long Kill.
The Long Kill, pouring out of a culvert, from where it crosses beneath railroad tracks.
Arriving at a sand pit, near the very north end of the preserve. Much of the north part of the preserve is covered in sand.
I dropped back down to a trail junction, taking the green trail which heads west a short distance, dead ending at the Dwaas Kill. Along the way, an old, abandoned car, complete with graffiti can be found just off trail.
The end of the green trail provides a pleasant, quiet spot along the Dwaas Kill.
Headed back to the orange trail once again, this time turning south. For some reason this section of trail seems much more overgrown with less maintenance. I had to push my way through dense brushy sections, including some prickers.
A small opening in the tree canopy provides a somewhat panoramic view over a bend in the Dwaas Kill.
Dwaas Kill reflections.
The Dwaas Kill at the far southern end of the preserve, with Kinns Road traffic just beyond.
Several benches have been placed strategically along the creek, but only one(the far southern bench) is not covered in weeds and undergrowth.
Followed the orange trail back north all the way to the car for a total of just under 2 miles RT. A very nice, cool fall day, but found several ticks on me in the parking lot. The only fly in the ointment, so to speak.
