The trails wind past and through several sports fields and rolling meadows with very nice views of the northern Catskills.
There are several different trail options, but I stayed on the main
trail, marked as a fitness/ ski trail. As mentioned, the trails pass
through gorgeous open fields laced with stone walls.
Mores stone walls as the trail winds west towards Basic Creek.
As soon as the trail hits the woods, a steep drop brings you down to
Basic Creek. Unfortunately, the creek was nearly completely frozen over
and snow covered on this day.
The most open water on the creek that I could find was this tiny opening in the ice.
After about .3 of a mile along the creek, the trail pushes steadily back
up through conifers towards the open meadows again. I believe this
land used to be farmed and the stone walls may have marked old cart
roads/ woods roads.
Stuck to the main trail, which hugs the perimeter of the park, before
eventually swinging back towards the starting point through more
gorgeous meadows. A shortcut trail leads to a lovely little pond, with a
small dock for fishing or resting on the north shore.
The trail winds along the pond's shore and is quite nice. Here's a glimpse back to the dock area.
After leaving the pond, the trail once again comes to an open area
where it appears corn stalks grow. Have never been here in the summer,
but would be curious if these fields are utilized for farming at all.
Got back to the car feeling great...a bit warm even. Was glad to shed
the jacket with the temp reading 46 degrees. Hiked about 2.5 miles
total at a very nice town park. One of my favorite town parks that I
have had the pleasure to hike at.
Enjoyed the hike photos of the park but who was George V Vanderbuilt & his relation to Greenville NY?
ReplyDeleteI did some digging on that and really had a hard time coming up with much. Not from that area, so perhaps a local would know more.
