Lion's Head(Connecticut)

Ventured back into northwest Connecticut's Litchfield hills this afternoon for a perfect after work hike to 1738 foot Lion's Head in Salisbury.  Lion's Head is part of the Appalachian Trail as well as a popular day hike due to its great views.  Today's hike would start from the parking area off of Bunker Hill Road, which is located a bit north and west of the village of Salisbury.
The views across the wide open fields on Bunker Hill at the trail entrance.
The blue blazed Lion's Head trail passes through private property, so it is imperative that you stay on the trail.
A sea of ferns on the ascent.
After a steady uphill climb, the white blazes of the Appalachian Trail comes in from the right.
Where the blue blazed Lion's Head bypass trail continues straight, the AT ascends directly up through a rocky climb towards the summit.

The final climb.
Emerging from the trees on the rocky summit trail is a phenomenal view to the south.
A view to the east with Twin Lakes being the most prominent feature.
A closer look at Twin Lakes and the Salisbury country side.
The rocky Appalachian Trail crossing Lion Head's summit area.
 The summit sign.
I lingered at the rocky ledges for quite a while, enjoying the great vista.
 Beginning the steep descent down.
This hike is unique in that the rewards are truly great for not a lot of effort.  The climb was steady, ascending 540 feet but never overly steep.  Hiked a total of 1.9 miles RT.

  1. Hi, I'd love to use your photo on top of Lion's Head with a short piece about the A.T. for a newspaper story. Email me at aldha@aol.com and I'll explain more. I would need to know ASAP, because of a deadline.... Thanks, --Bill
