Buttermilk Falls(Schaghticoke)

Haven't gotten out much recently due to a frustrating, stubborn cold and rainy weather pattern.  Took an opportunity today, however, to check out relatively unknown Buttermilk Falls in the town of Schaghticoke, which I knew would be running at full blast from snow melt and recent rains.
The picturesque falls come cascading 16 feet down a broad section of the Tomhannock Creek and are easily visible from the road.  There is no formal parking, but an obvious pull off just after a bridge makes for a great spot to soak in the view.  A small foot path leads down over a guardrail to the water's edge, giving a different perspective.
Another perspective from above the falls.
To access the falls, follow Route 40 north out of Troy until it meets Route 67 in Schaghticoke.  Turn left on 67 and follow it to Buttermilk Falls Road, again on your left. The falls will appear on your left after roughly a mile and a half.

  1. A friend and I used to frequent the falls. I went by there three weeks ago and it was bone dry. My friend and I went by again today and no falls. Just a small pool of water at the bottom.

    1. These falls are notorious for drying out during the summer. A couple of years ago, I was able to walk upstream above the falls for quite a ways, simply jumping over puddles. After heavy rains and during the spring season, these falls are truly magnificent.
